Esta es la décima temporada de Bird en las Storm, cosa que se celebró el sábado en el Key Arena, regalando un nuevo “bobblehead” de Sue de edición especial a los primeros 4,000 asistentes.
"When I think about being with this franchise for 10 years, I really feel like I've grown up here," dice Bird. "From year 21 to now I'm 30, a lot happens in your 20s. Basketball-wise, the fans, the community, they've embraced me and they've watched me do that. It's something special."
La primera cosa que chocó a Sue sobre Seattle era la distancia a la que está de New York, donde ella vivía. Bird había podido estar relativamente cerca durante su etapa en la universidad de Connecticut. Después de ser elegida en el draft por Seattle en 2002, Bird tuvo que cruzar el país para ir a Seattle, donde solo había estado una vez con UCon en 2000.
"I just knew it was really far," confiesa Bird. "It was the first time I was going to be really far from my home and my friends and family. I wasn't nervous about that, but that's all I knew."
La temporada de Sue como rookie fue, como ella la describe, un torbellino. Era la nueva cara de la WNBA y estaba muy ocupada con viajes y entrevistas y apenas tenía tiempo para conocer algo de Seattle. Ella bromea sobre los 10 minutos que se tomaba para ir en coche a buscar algo de comer, en vez de ir a la tienda que había cerca del Key Arena o de dónde entrenaba.
"The minute the season was over, I was on a redeye," dice Bird. "We got knocked out of the playoffs - the next day I was on my way home."
